NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - New Orleans police released bodycam video Tuesday of an officer-involved shooting earlier this month.

According to NOPD, an armed robbery suspect, identified as Daniel Castillo, 32, was shot two times in the leg during a gunfire exchange with police on Tues., Feb. 8. His injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Castillo was shot around 8 p.m. in the 2500 block of St. Louis Street. Police said officers were canvassing the area searching for the man after reports of an armed robbery around the corner in the 400 block of North Dorgenois Street.

Police say Castillo held up two women at gunpoint in a church parking lot and stole one of the women’s purse with her cell phone in it.

Officer Levi Atkin located Castillo behind a row of bushes in a field at the Lafitte Greenway across the street. Castillo refused commands to show his hands and drop his firearm.

In a press conference Tuesday, Superintendent Shaun Ferguson said Castillo fired twice before Atkin shot back. Castillo’s gun reportedly jammed during the exchange of gunfire.

“If you look at this video, he is in an open field when this individual fired shots at him,” Ferguson said. “He has nowhere to take cover. The only thing he can do is return fire to save himself.”

Atkin fires 17 times, striking Castillo in the leg twice.

Atkin received a commendation from the department in 2020 for helping to quickly get NOPD officer Trevor Abney to University Medical Center for life-saving treatment after the fellow policeman had been shot in the face in the French Quarter on Oct. 31. Donnell Hassell was booked with attempted murder as the suspect accused of ambushing Abney and another officer from the back of a pedicab.

Court records show Hassell has been deemed mentally incompetent to stand trial. He is scheduled for another mental health competency hearing March 9.

Atkin remains on desk duty while the investigation continues.

The Phoenix Police Department released a Critical Incident Briefing (CIB) video that includes audio, visuals and information related to an officer-involved shooting (OIS) which occurred on February 7, 2022 in the area 28th Avenue and Coronado Road. This incident occurred around 1 pm, when a witness called 911 to report a woman was bleeding badly after being stabbed multiple times by a man. The man was later identified as 30-year-old Emilio Chamizo. The first responding officer was flagged down by a witness who told the officer where he last saw Chamizo, who was armed with a knife. The officer shared the information over the radio for other responding patrol units. Two additional officers arrived on scene less than a minute later. One of the officers tried to contact Chamizo who was walking away towards an alley. The officer told Chamizo to get down on the ground, but Chamizo ignored the commands. The officer pulled forward in order to catch up to Chamizo as he was walking into the alley. As the officer stopped his patrol car, Chamizo turned around and began walking toward the officer.

Chamizo had a knife in one hand and a pair of scissors in the other. The officer ordered him to drop the knife. Chamizo responded by raising both hands. From the distance of approximately 20 feet, the officer responded by firing his duty weapon, striking Chamizo. The secondary officer was getting out of her patrol vehicle when the officer involved shooting occurred. Chamizo continued to walk towards the secondary officer until he collapsed. After the shooting, Chamizo was still holding the knife and scissors. Officers gave Chamizo commands to throw the knife away. When the officers realized Chamizo was unresponsive, they moved in to provide medical aid until the Phoenix Fire Department arrived. Chamizo was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries. The knife and scissors used by Chamizo was recovered on scene. The officer involved in this shooting has been with the department for six and half years and is assigned to the Maryvale/Estrella Mountain Precinct.

Fresno police on Friday released body-worn camera footage of officers killing a man on the lawn of the historic Meux Home. Police responded to the scene after a man who works at the Meux Home, which is on Tulare and R streets, reported an apparent break-in on Jan. 13, the video shows. Two officers arrived — a man and a woman — and found 26-year-old Edgar Mendoza, who they ordered to get on the ground, video shows. Mendoza spoke mostly Spanish to the officers, video shows, but also spoke in English at one point. Video from the female officer’s camera shows Mendoza throw a punch at the male officer.

That officer used a Taser, which brought Mendoza to his knees before he pulled out the Taser’s projectiles, video shows. Mendoza then stood up, picked up a hammer and charged the male officer. The officers fired at least four rounds as Mendoza fell to the ground. The two officers involved have not been identified, but Chief Paco Balderrama previously said they had more than 10 years each with the department.

A 57-year-old woman was hit in the head with a hammer several times and robbed in one of the latest violent crimes in a New York subway station, police said.
Police are searching for a suspect who kicked the woman and struck her "numerous times" and fled on foot with her purse, New York Police Department Chief of Detectives James Essig said at a news conference Friday afternoon.
The woman's family identified her as Nina Rothschild, a scientist for the New York City Department of Health. She was attacked just 15 minutes after leaving work, police said.

The woman was attacked about 11 p.m. Thursday by a 6-foot tall male wearing a dark jacket, blue jeans and holding a cane, Essig said.
"This is an unprovoked, brutal and appalling crime on a woman who was just trying to get home after a day's work," Essig said.
Rothschild, who was bleeding from her brain, was taken to Cornell Medical Center with a fractured skull and lacerations to her face, Essig said.

She has had part of her skull replaced with wire mesh, according to her brother, Gerson Rothschild. She also has a drop foot, a condition where the patient is unable to lift their foot. It is unclear whether it was nerve damage or a mental block, he said.
"Of course, I can't wish this on someone else, it shouldn't happen to anyone," Gerson Rothschild told CNN on Saturday. "I wish it wasn't my sister, but we have to deal with what we have."
The sibling pair lost their parents within 29 days of each other in 2000.
"It's just Nina and me, basically it's just the two of us," Gerson Rothschild said. "Little brother will do whatever he can to protect big sister."

District Attorney Larry Krasner announced two Philadelphia corrections officers have been charged with felony aggravated assault following the violent beating of an incarcerated individual that occurred last summer and was captured on surveillance video.

The District Attorney’s Office (DAO) Special Investigations Unit (SIU) on Wednesday arrested and charged the two Department of Prisons officers, Jean Castor (DOB: 3/10/1967) and Terrel Felts (DOB: 9/29/1989), with Aggravated Assault (F1), Simple Assault (M2), Recklessly Endangering Another Person (M2), and Official Oppression (M2). The officers are alleged to have violently punched, kicked, and beaten an incarcerated individual, causing serious bodily injury, at Curran-Fromhold Correction Facility on July 16th.

Castor is also alleged to have used a Department of Prisons-issued handheld radio to strike the victim on the head, for which he faces an additional charge of Possessing an Instrument of Crime (M1). While the altercation began when an incarcerated person struck Castor, it ended in an unjustified beating that continued well after all threats from inmates had been neutralized. Video of the incident shows several other corrections officers attempting to intervene and break up the altercation, at times pulling the defendants — still kicking or punching — away from the victim as he lay prone on the ground.

“At a time when we have far more questions than answers about unsafe conditions and staffing levels in Philadelphia jails, this incident should disturb all of our consciences. People who staff and secure jails deserve safe and healthy working conditions, and should be expected to perform their duties with integrity. The Eighth and Fourteenth Amendment rights of incarcerated people must also be honored for our criminal justice system to have legitimacy,” DA Krasner said. “I want to thank our Special Investigations Unit for holding these two corrections officers accountable and seeking some measure of justice for the victim of this assault. I will continue to press for answers from our justice system partners, because authority to remove people from their communities and to hold them in our custody must be wielded responsibly and accountability.”
