On January 11, 2022, Detective Kip Peterson learned that a 2018 Dodge Journey was stolen from a home and received information that John Herring was the individual that committed the theft.

On January 12, 2022, Detective Peterson received information that the stolen vehicle may be in the Marion Oaks area. K-9 Cpl. Batts responded to the area, located the vehicle, and attempted to conduct a traffic stop.

Herring, who was driving the stolen vehicle. refused to stop and attempted to flee from Cpl. Batts. In response, Cpl. Batts initiated a short pursuit which he brought to its conclusion by conducting a perfect PIT maneuver.

Herring, who did not have a valid driver’s license, was placed under arrest and transported to the Marion County Jail.

Herring has been charged with Grand Theft of a Motor Vehicle, Fleeing to Elude a Law Enforcement Officer, and No Valid Driver’s License.

Unfortunately, Herring was able to steal this vehicle because the doors were unlocked and the keys were inside. Do not make it easy for thieves!

Town officials released video footage late Wednesday that shows a York Police Department officer using a K-9 to subdue local pediatrician Stephen Brennan during a traffic stop more than two years ago.

The release of the footage comes about a week after Brennan’s attorneys announced their client had reached a $325,000 settlement agreement with the town and Patrolman Jonathan Rogers, who had released the dog during the encounter on Sept. 20, 2019.

In a joint statement released with the footage, York Town Manager Steve Burns and Acting Police Chief Owen Davis said Rogers “simply did his job to keep York a safe place.”

Brennan was 63 at the time of the incident and ran Yorkids Pediatrics. Brennan suffered multiple injuries, including dog bites that his attorneys said required months of follow-up and wound care.

The 21-minute video, which was released in response to a public records request from Seacoast Media Group, includes audio and dashboard camera video. There was no body-worn camera used during the encounter, Burns said.

Rogers pulled over Brennan for allegedly flashing his high beams. The video shows Brennan stepped out of his vehicle before Rogers’ cruiser had fully stopped.

As Brennan walked toward the police cruiser, Rogers shouted at him to put his hands up. Brennan complied at first, but he continued walking while Rogers yelled three times for him to stop.

Brennan stopped for a moment with his hands raised, then he dropped them and turned back toward his own vehicle. Rogers left his cruiser and approached Brennan, telling him to stop moving. Rogers had his gun drawn and pointed at Brennan.

Brennan turned again toward Rogers, who repeatedly warned that he would sic the K-9 on him if he did not turn around and comply.

After Rogers told Brennan six times to get on the ground, Brennan dropped to his knees. Rogers told Brennan to get on the ground one more time as the K-9 ran toward Brennan and knocked him to the ground.

No more than 40 seconds elapsed between when Rogers’ patrol car came to a stop on scene and when his K-9 can be seen in the video running at Brennan.

While Brennan was on the ground with the police dog on top of him, Rogers told him to get on the ground again and put his hands behind his back. Brennan rolled onto his stomach as the dog appeared to continue biting down on his leg. At the same time, Rogers told Brennan to stop resisting.

Rogers was on the ground atop Brennan while the K-9 continued subdue him. Rogers eventually pulled the dog off of Brennan, who remained on the ground with his hands behind his back.

The K-9’s engagement with Brennan lasted about 80 seconds.

Newly obtained surveillance video captures frightening moments from a SWAT standoff with an armed man on Jacksonville’s Southside.

The video, which News4Jax obtained from a nearby business owner, shows a man pulling up Thursday morning in a black pickup truck, then entering the Serenity Spa on Southside Boulevard with a gun in his hand.

Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Chief of Investigations T.K. Waters identified the man as Gabriel Campla, 33.

Minutes later, video shows two male customers and two female employees run out of the massage parlor’s front doors. The video then shows the suspect, gun in hand, telling an employee to come back into the salon. He closes the door after she returns.

Cellphone videos from a nearby business show one of the customers who escaped hiding behind his SUV with a gun pointed toward the front of the business. He held that position as the first patrol officers arrived minutes later.

Khalid Anwar owns a food store next door. He said he heard the commotion and tried to step out, but the armed customer told him to go back inside for his safety.

“It very dangerous,” Anwar said. “We were scared. We were shaking. Anything could happen.”

Anwar said it was especially scary because the walls between his shop and the salon are drywall and that he’d been robbed and beaten by someone years earlier.

Anwar’s video showed police arriving with guns drawn and escorting him and other bystanders to safety.

Meanwhile, the JSO SWAT team, air unit, K9 unit and countless patrol officers flooded the area, closing down Southside Boulevard.

FBI and Florida Department of Law Enforcement agents also arrived to assist, along with state troopers.

Waters said a woman who was being held hostage inside the business calmed the man down, got him to lie down and then escaped through a back door, unharmed.

After hours of a tense standoff, video shows SWAT team members moving in with armored vehicles. They use their trucks to push the black pickup out of the way.

Minutes later, Campla walks out with his hands up. There is no audio in the video, so News4JAX can not hear the commands.

SWAT team Officer Cheth Plaugher releases his K9, Huk, who grabs Campla by the arm and pulls him to the ground. SWAT team members move in toward Campla as a separate group searches the spa for other possible threats or hostages. None were found.

A SWAT medic and Jacksonville firefighters treat Campla for bite wounds, load him onto a stretcher, and by police-escort, take him to the hospital.

Friday afternoon, Duval County jail records revealed that Campla had been released from the hospital and booked into jail on a $250,000 bond. He faces a number of felony charges ranging from attempted murder, aggravated assault and false imprisonment.

Waters said he’s a person of interest in an unrelated robbery.

News4JAX searched his history and found one criminal traffic charge, a petition for an injunction against domestic violence against him and several traffic violations. The judge did not grant the injunction.

Detectives said they did not have a motive for why Campla chose the business. Anyone with information is asked to call the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Employees at the spa told News4JAX they were shaken up and did not immediately want to talk about what happened.
