Tempe, Arizona — On August 14, 2023, Tempe police officers responded to a report of a car break-in in a parking lot near Baseline and Rural roads. A 9-1-1 caller reported that someone had smashed a vehicle's glass and took a book bag from it. It was then discovered that the car belonged to a man, identified as 45-year-old John Andreyo. Two officers arrived and found Andreyo in the stairwell near the now-closed Flo’s Asian restaurant. One officer ordered him to show his hands, but Andreyo wouldn't drop his bag. When another police arrived, drawing his gun, the first officer pulled out his Taser. Both officers pointed their weapons at Andreyo. In the body-cam video it can be heard, Andreyo loading a gun. “He’s got a gun! He’s got a gun!” the first officer exclaimed while running out of the way. Andreyo then fired his gun multiple times, and the second officer returned fire, striking Andreyo multiple times. Police later said Andreyo would have fired more shots, but his gun jammed. Andreyo was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

Naugatuck, Connecticut — On October 14, 2023, Naugatuck Police Officers got a call for shoplifting at Stop and Shop in Naugatuck when 33-year-old Jarrell Day of Waterbury attempted to steal over $200 worth of beer. During the course of that theft, it was updated to a robbery charge due to the fact that there was an altercation between store staff and the suspect in question. In police body camera video, Detective Williams can be seen approaching the suspect's car and ordering both occupants out of the vehicle. The car takes off, hitting a police cruiser while driving away. A second video, taken from Officer Kehoss' body camera, shows Kehoss driving after the fleeing vehicle and finding it crashed into a pole a short distance away. Officer Kehoss chased Day and ordered him to stop before pulling out a stun gun and telling him to get on the ground. The officer then deploys the stun gun, causing Day to fall to the ground. The officer ordered Day to roll onto his stomach. When Day didn't comply, Kehoss electrified the stun gun again.

He did so one more time after asking the suspect to put his hands behind his back. After the incident, Officer Kehoss’ supervisors reviewed the video and brought it to the attention of the Office of the State’s Attorney. That office then directed the Connecticut State Police to investigate to determine if criminal charges needed to be brought against the officer. On October 30, 2023, Officer Nicholas Kehoss turned himself in to Troop A in Southbury on an active arrest warrant Monday, charging him with intentional cruelty to persons and third-degree assault. Officer Kehoss was released on a $50,000 bond and is scheduled to appear at (GA4) Waterbury Superior Court on November 11, 2023. Day was charged with attempted second-degree assault, third-degree robbery, assault on police, illegal possession of a weapon in a vehicle, second-degree larceny, reckless driving, operating under suspension and evading responsibility. He was held on $200,000 bond after the arrest.

Laguna Beach , California — On March 11, 2021, at approximately 5:54 p.m., Steinmetz is seen on video surveillance footage entering the Balboa Bay Resort parking garage. In that footage, Steinmetz entered and drove away in a white Mercedes Sedan at 5:55 p.m. Around 6:15 p.m., the owner of the Mercedes called Newport Beach police to report it stolen. Approximately 6:18 p.m., Laguna Beach Police Department Officer Ryan Radel, observed the Mercedes driven by Steinmetz traveling southbound at a high rate of speed. Officer Radel followed Steinmetz in the Mercedes, waiting for a safe place to conduct a traffic stop. Steinmetz continued to drive unpredictably. Steinmetz pulled the Mercedes over on the shoulder of Pacific Coast Highway, and Officer Radel exited his police unit to approach Steinmetz on the driver side. As Officer Radel approached, Steinmetz suddenly made a hard-left turn and quickly accelerated his vehicle away from Officer Radel. As Officer Radel raced back to his unit to give chase, Steinmetz collided with multiple cars. This collision caused one vehicle to veer off the road and another to flip and ultimately end on its side. Steinmetz continued eastbound on Newport Coast Drive from Pacific Coast Highway.

During the pursuit, Steinmetz swerved in and out of oncoming traffic while driving on the wrong side of the road. Laguna Beach police officers successfully deployed a spike strip which caused severe damage to the tires of the Mercedes. Eventually, Corporal James Gramer successfully performed a pursuit intervention technique (PIT) maneuver by tapping the rear of the Mercedes with the front of his police vehicle, causing the Mercedes to spin and eventually stop. At 6:38 p.m., less than 15 seconds after the Mercedes came to a stop, Steinmetz quickly exited his vehicle. Upon exiting, Steinmetz immediately stepped backward and made a distinct movement to put both hands to his right hip. This was indicative of someone attempting to grab or hide something at the right hip. Steinmetz continued to keep his hands at his waistband then suddenly walked forward, almost jumping or lunging, toward the officers. As Steinmetz moved rapidly toward the officers, Steinmetz quickly raised both hands chest high from his right hip.

He simultaneously pressed his palms together, extended his finger and arms outward directly at Officer Radel. Steinmetz purposefully simulated having a gun by making this gesture and doing so in a quick movement. Due to this perceived threat, Officer Radel fired six rounds. Despite the shots fired, Steinmetz appeared unfazed and continued to move forward towards the officers. Steinmetz continued charging toward the officers, moving between Officer Radel and Sergeant Downing's vehicles. Officers indicated it was clear Steinmetz was not holding a firearm, therefore non-lethal force was used. The Taser successfully incapacitated Steinmetz, and he fell to the ground. Officer Radel then retrieved a first aid kit and provided it to the officers who immediately began rendering aid. Steinmetz was transported to Mission Hospital Mission Viejo. Steinmetz was transported at the hospital and eventually underwent surgery. Steinmetz was deemed to have sustained three gunshot wounds: one to his upper left chest, one to his lower right abdomen, and one to his lower left forearm. He ultimately survived his injuries.

Sparks, Nevada — On May 4, 2020, shortly before 8:00 pm, 36-year-old Ronal Adalberto Zendejas (hereinafter “Zendejas”) entered the office of Motel 6, located at 2405 Victorian Avenue in Sparks, Nevada, and rented a room for one night. For unknown reasons, his demeanor was rude and aggressive, and the front desk manager recognized that he was drunk. After renting the room, he punched the plexiglass separating the lobby and employee areas, and then punched the office window as he left. Shortly thereafter, Zendejas returned to the office and was angrier than he was before, but then left again. Just minutes later, Zendejas followed the general manager into the office, this time armed with a running chainsaw. The general manager retreated behind the counter, and Zendejas used the chainsaw to cut through the swinging half-door which separates the lobby and employee areas. The front desk manager took cover in the employee bathroom, while the general manager went into his apartment, which was connected to the office. Zendejas, who was still armed with the chainsaw, then entered the employee area.

Zendejas ultimately left the office and went to room number 102, which was next to the office. He contacted the occupant of that room, and swung the chainsaw towards him, causing the occupant to take evasive measures. During this dangerous interaction, Zendejas cut the door and door handle to room number 102. As these attacks were taking place, two calls were placed to 911 at approximately 8:08 pm, and Sparks Police Department (hereinafter “SPD”) officers responded, with Officers Thomas Radley (hereinafter “Officer Radley”) and Adrian Berumen (hereinafter “Officer Berumen”) being the first two to arrive. Once these officers arrived, people on-scene pointed to Zendejas, who was then sitting in his blue Honda Accord parked in the Motel 6 parking lot. The officers, who were dressed in full police uniforms, approached Zendejas, verbally identified themselves as police, and ordered him to stop and show his hands. Zendejas ignored their commands and rapidly reversed, and then drove out of the parking lot at a high rate of speed.

As he fled, Zendejas drove across all travel lanes of Victorian Avenue, over a curb, struck a metal street sign, and stopped on landscaping rocks. Officers Radley and Berumen chased after Zendejas, and Officer Berumen repeated his commands to stop the car, but Zendejas again refused to comply. Instead, Zendejas reversed his vehicle, dragging the street sign with it, struck Officer Berumen’s patrol vehicle, and crashed rear-end into the wall of a nearby car wash. Officers Radley and Berumen, recognizing the serious threat Zendejas presented to them and the public, continued to chase after Zendejas. As they got closer, Officer Radley again ordered Zendejas to show his hands and stop, but Zendejas began driving away from the car wash at a high rate of speed. Officer Radley, followed by Officer Berumen, responded by firing their duty handguns towards Zendejas. As the gunfire subsided, Zendejas’ vehicle drove into a parking lot next to a smog shop and crashed front-end into a wall. Additional officers arrived, approached the vehicle, and removed Zendejas from the driver’s seat. Zendejas did not survive the incident, and a subsequent autopsy found the cause of his death to be multiple gunshot wounds.
